The AN-S4 is a step-up transformer that provides the necessary gain and impedance matching to allow a low-output MC cartridge to be connected to a standard phono preamplifier designed for use with MM cartridges. By using a transformer instead of an active amplifier stage, the AN-S4 avoids adding additional noise or distortion to the signal, which can be especially important with low-output MC cartridges.

The core material used in the AN-S4 transformers is 0.1 mm laminated mumetal, which is a high-permeability magnetic material that helps to maximize the transformer’s performance. This material is particularly effective at reducing magnetic flux leakage, which can cause distortion and other unwanted effects.

In addition to the high-quality core material, the transformers in the AN-S4 are wound with 99.99% pure Silver wire. Silver is known for its excellent conductivity and is often preferred in high-end audio applications for its ability to transmit a clear and detailed signal. By using high-quality core materials and Silver wire in the transformers, the AN-S4 is able to provide excellent performance with low distortion and a high level of detail and clarity.

Matching the impedance of the MC Cartridge to the input impedance of the AN-S4 is important for achieving the best possible sound quality. To accommodate the different types of MC Cartridges, the AN-S4 is available in four versions ranging from low impedance, low-medium impedance, medium impedance, and high impedance. 

While converting the low current output signal of the MC Cartridge to a higher voltage, low current signal, the AN-S4 ensures that the signal can be easily and effectively amplified, resulting in high-quality sound reproduction.
