EAR USA Phono Classic Phono Stage

The EAR USA Phono Classic Phono Stage, known internationally as the ‘PhonoBox’, represents a significant advancement in audio technology, rooted in a rich heritage and enhanced by modern innovation.

The Phono Classic is a direct descendant of the legendary EAR 834P, introduced to the hifi market in 1994 and designed by the late great Tim De Paravicini. The 834P’s pioneering design set a high benchmark in audio fidelity, and the Phono Classic builds upon this with updated circuitry and casework. Central to its sound reproduction are three 13D16 vacuum tubes, variants of the ECC83, though there is an option for 12AX7s, allowing customization for those who prefer to experiment with different tubes.

The device accommodates both MM (Moving Magnet) and MC (Moving Coil) cartridges, a testament to its versatility and appeal to a wide range of audio enthusiasts. Its functional design includes a ground post, RCA input and output, and an IEC inlet, all contributing to its ease of use. The selection between MM or MC loading is facilitated by a simple push button, engaging the internal step-up transformers for each channel.

Aesthetically, the Phono Classic offers a choice between a black or mirror-like chrome front face, catering to diverse preferences in appearance. Additionally, an ALPS volume control is available as an optional feature at no extra charge, enhancing the device’s user-friendliness and practicality.

Tim De Paravicini’s legacy is deeply embedded in the Phono Classic. Known for his meticulous craftsmanship, whether in bespoke studio installations or more accessible audio devices, his expertise and unique life experiences are reflected in the design and performance of the Phono Classic. This legacy of excellence continues to inspire confidence in the quality and capabilities of the device.

The EAR Phono Classic range has evolved significantly since its initial launch. Initially recognized as the only valve phono stage accommodating both high-quality MC and MM cartridges, the range now includes three distinct models. The Classic retains the original circuit architecture, offering high-quality sound through MM cartridges within a robust metal case. The Signature model builds on the Classic’s specifications by adding a superior MC input stage and the option of a high-quality volume control. At the top of the range, the Special Edition boasts a striking chrome and gold cabinet and receives extra attention in quality control, making it an ideal choice for the most discerning vinyl enthusiasts. With different moving coil input options, this unit is designed to integrate seamlessly into the most demanding audio systems.
